"In the beginning, Ira would push paint around and then turn the canvas over to me. I would then approach the canvas as if it were an ink-block test, drawing from what I saw or felt. Using acrylics we could layer our thoughts and emotions without fear of the paintings cracking. It was in this way that our dialogue began. Our paintings reflect the times in which they were painted, and what was happening in our lives. Over the years we have created a pictorial language, a forty year ongoing serial dialogue." "With the birth of our daughter in 1990, our collaboration became more social / political in nature. We began to draw more from the external world. It was impossible to be as cynical as we had been about the future, because it belonged to our daughter. We have continued to work but our focus has become more unviversal." Corliss Lesser
